About us
From the South to the North: My Creative Journey
I’m Valentina – a Chilean singer-songwriter, poet, author, and visual artist based in Scotland. My creative practice is a meeting place for music, language, memory, and movement. I work across disciplines to explore themes of exile,
identity, resistance, and tenderness, always seeking the emotional truth that lives beneath the surface.
My roots and my voice are anchored in Latin America, where every word carries the pulse of my land. Through song, poetry, and visual storytelling, I weave together the intimate and the collective, the personal and the political.
I perform folk songs and original compositions with Valentina y Voces del Sur, a group I co-formed with guitarist David A Russell, dedicated to Latin American musical traditions and contemporary expression. I have collaborated
for many years with Mr McFall’s Chamber and other ensembles, singing tango and other Latin American genres.
As a budding filmmaker, I’m currently developing Tango Lass / Doña Soledad, a cross-cultural dance drama set in Scotland. This project brings together tango, poetry, and personal history in a cinematic journey that dances
between continents and speaks in more than one language.

What the papers said
“Valentina Montoya Martínez’ María is a vocal performance of richly nuanced, wholly idiomatic sophistication”
“Valentina Montoya Martínez unflinching as María”
“There’s something quite extraordinary about the range of sentiment and expression she draws from a set of songs that are intrinsically tango-based, though the reason is obvious when you consider that these are based on
stories from her own interesting life, from childhood in Chile to exile in England” (Queen’s Hall, María de Buenos Aires article)
